ACLU joins Georgia voter verification suit
July 8, 2010
ATLANTA, Georgia: On Tuesday, July 6, 2010, the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), along with several other civil liberty activist groups, "filed a motion to intervene in a lawsuit filed by Georgia over the state's voter verification process," serving as defendants in the case.[1] Georgia Secretary of State Brian Kemp is seeking "clearance" after the United States Justice Department rejected a request made on behalf of Republican Governor Sonny Perdue to alter the state's election procedures so as to make it a requirement for "first-time, would-be voters confirm they are in fact U.S. citizens."[2]
