Alcala appointed to Court of Criminal Appeals
March 29, 2011
Texas: Judge Elsa Alcala was appointed to the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals by Governor Rick Perry on March 23, 2011. She replaced retiring judge Charles Holcomb, who reached the mandatory age of retirement. Currently a justice in Harris County on the First Court of Appeals, Alcala was previously a judge on the 338th District Court. "She received a bachelor's degree from Texas A&M University at Kingsville and her law degree from the University of Texas School of Law, board certified in criminal law."[1]
Judge Alcala is currently the only minority to serve on the Court of Criminal Appeals, the court of last resort for all criminal matters in Texas. She is also thought to be the first Hispanic woman to be a justice on the Court.[2] "This is the first new judge on the court of criminal appeals since Nov. 5, 2002."[1]
