MONTPELIER, Vermont: Governor Peter Shumlin signed a bill into law that makes Vermont the 17th state to either legalize or decriminalize marijuana possession.[1]
Shumlin called it a more "common sense" way to deal with marijuana possession. He said, "When Vermonters do abuse marijuana, let’s make sure it’s a traffic ticket kind of fine and it doesn’t affect the rest of their lives."[1]
Marijuana use is still illegal in Vermont, however criminal penalties are being replaced with civil fines, similar to those one might get for speeding.[1]
