Structure

Mission

The mission statement of the Rhode Island Department of Elementary and Secondary Education reads:[1]

The mission of the Board of Regents for Elementary and Secondary Education is to lead and support schools and communities in ensuring that all students achieve at the highest levels needed to lead fulfilling and productive lives, to succeed in academic employment settings, and to contribute to society.[2]

State Board of Education

The Board of Education consists of 11 members appointed by the Governor and approved by the Rhode Island State Senate. The board was created in 2013 by the merger of separate boards dealing with K-12 schools and higher education. Board members are responsible for developing policies related to early childhood education, K-12 curriculum, school safety and charter schools.[3]
