South Dakota allows municipal charter cities and counties. There are 66 total counties in South Dakota. Of those 66:[1]

There are 310 total municipalities in South Dakota. Of those 310, 300 of them are General law municipalities while the remaining 10 are Charter/Home rule cities.[1]

According to a 2022 study from the U.S. Census Bureau, this state's local governments consist of 66 counties, 1,207 cities, towns, and villages, and 487 special districts.[2]
