Florida tax collector
Tax Collector is an elected position in the state of Florida according to the state's constitution.
Election
Tax Collectors in Florida are elected by the voters of their county and serve a term of four years.
Government responsibilities
Tax Collectors direct, plan, organize, budget, set and implement policies that impact their local government, as well as the state. Tax Collectors participate in the management of the executive branches of state government that include the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, and the Department of Revenue.
This officer drafts tax legislation and establishes rules and regulations for carrying out laws regarding the collection of taxes.
Tax Collectors, in compliance with the Taxpayer's Bill of Rights, calculate and collect taxes on behalf of taxes levied by the county, the school board, any special taxing districts within the county, and all municipalities within the county.[1]
The county Tax Collectors are entitled to receive, with the amount of all real and tangible personal property taxes and special assessments collected and remitted, these commissions:
On the county tax:
- Ten percent on the first $100,000;
- Five percent on the next $100,000;
- Three percent on the balance up to the amount of taxes collected and remitted on an assessed valuation of $50 million; and
- Two percent on the balance.
- On collections on behalf of each taxing district and special assessment district:
- Three percent on the amount of taxes collected and remitted on an assessed valuation of $50 million; and
- Two percent on the balance; and
- Actual costs of collection, not to exceed 2 percent, on the amount of special assessments collected and remitted.[1]
