Structure
Mission
The mission statement of the New Mexico Public Education Department reads:[1]

Superintendent
The acting New Mexico Secretary of Education is Mariana Padilla (nonpartisan). Padilla assumed office in 2024.
New Mexico Public Education Commission
The New Mexico Public Education Commission is composed of ten members who are elected to serve staggered terms of four years. Each member is elected from one of ten Public Education Commission districts and must live within the district they are elected from. The Governor may appoint residents of a district to serve a vacant position within that district. The Commission is advisory to the Secretary of Education and serve as the authorizers for all state chartered charter schools in New Mexico.[3]
