According to The Ballot Initiative Gazette, significant news in the last week or so includes:
- With a July 3 deadline, initiative activist Tim Eyman turned in signatures for his I-1033. Maine, Ohio and Washington are the only states that allow initiated measures in odd-numbered years.
- Arizona Senate supports ban on public campaign money. This measure, if it succeeds, will eliminate or alter provisions of the state's 1998 Clean Money Initiative.
- Personhood amendments proposed in Colorado and Montana. A pair of statewide initiatives that tap right into the middle of the abortion debate were launched in Colorado and Montana.
- Following on events that transpired with the North Dakota Income Tax Cut (2008), the North Dakota attorney general says no taxpayer money for ballot measures.
- Signatures turned in to qualify the South Dakota Smoking Ban Referendum (2010) are being challenged.
- Will 2009 be the year of the veto referendum? In Oregon, businesses fight permanent tax hikes using the process.
