Mike Toomey is a Texas lobbyist, former chief of staff to Texas governors Rick Perry and Bill Clements and a former member of the Texas House of Representatives.[1][2][3] His lobbying client list includes Texans for Lawsuit Reform, Big City Capital, U.S. Oil Recovery, AT&T and Texas Instruments.[2][4]
Career
Mike Toomey attended Baylor University, graduating in 1972, and South Texas College of Law, graduating in 1976.[1] He practiced law in Houston from 1976 to 1988.[1] In 1982, he was first elected to the Texas House of Representatives and served three terms.[1][3] From 1989 to 1990, he served as chief of staff to Governor Bill Clements.[1]
Toomey began his lobbying practice in 1990.[5] His clients during that period included Texans for Lawsuit Reform.[5] Toomey became chief of staff to his former fellow legislator and longtime friend Governor Rick Perry in 2002.[1][2][5] He served in that capacity until 2004.[1]
In 2002, Toomey founded The Texas Lobby Group.[4] The firm’s website lists its services as “legislative lobbying, administrative lobbying, strategy development, grassroots development and mobilization, internal and external communications, and political strategy, advice and counsel.”[4] Its clients include Liberty Mutual, AT&T, UnitedHealth Group and Texas Instruments.[4] Texas Monthly named Toomey one of the 25 most powerful people in Texas politics in 2003.[6]
In 2011, Toomey founded the super PAC Make Us Great Again in order to support Rick Perry’s 2012 candidacy for the Republican nomination for president.[7][8]
