An effort to recall Gale Pospisil from her position as mayor of New Braunfels, Texas began in October 2011.[1] The recall effort failed to collect enough signatures to force a recall election.
Seven hundred thirty-five signatures were required to force an election. Out of the 1,117 that were turned in to the city secretary on December 2, only 668 were verified - 67 short.[2]
The recall effort was started after a can ban, which Mayor Pospisil supported, was passed in the city that prohibited disposable containers on the Comal and Guadalupe rivers within New Braufel lines.[1] A policial action committee called Can the Ban was organized by Mark McGonigal to oppose the ordinance. When the ordinance passed the group led the recall effort against the mayor.[2]
Commenting on the failed recall effort, Mayor Pospisil said, "I'm frankly really looking forward to continuing to do a good job for the city. They need to move on and find some more productive use of their time."[2]
Path to the ballot
The ability to force a recall election in Braunfels is laid out in the city's charter. According to the recall rules set forth in that charter, 735 signatures from registered voters were needed to force an election at the time of the recall effort.[2]
