An effort to recall Mayor Luigi Boria in Doral, Florida from his position was launched in November 2013.[1] It did not go to a vote.[2]
Two Venezuelan investors living in Doral were said to be organizing a recall effort. "The mayor’s performance has been disastrous for the city’s image. His performance has been so bad that now Venezuelans and Cubans are fighting each other [...] something we are not willing to tolerate," said Henry D. Contreras, co-owner of the Aloft Hotel in Doral. Another local business man, Tomás Romero, who runs World Atlantic Airlines, said, "I am upset and disappointed with the work the mayor has done."[3]
On October 11 "PAC Doral United/Unidos por Doral" was registered, a PAC to raise funds for the defense of Mayor Boria.[3]
Former council member Pete Cabrera called the recall effort a "political play." Cabrera said, "I don’t agree with a recall because it’s a sabotage against the mayor. I believe Luigi has done things, a lot of things, that have been wrong, but I also believe that he should have the opportunity to do things right."[3]
Current councilwoman Sandra Ruiz did not support the recall.[3]
Path to the ballot
The recall effort stalled in late February 2014 after a poll commissioned by a group of recall supporters found that a majority of city residents did not favor a recall. The full results of the poll were not released.[2]
