An effort to recall council member Greg Mueller in Webster Groves, Missouri, from his position was launched in May 2015.[1] The recall effort did not go to a vote.[2]

The group targeting Mueller announced the end of the recall on June 16, 2015. "In recognition of Mr. Mueller's recent dialogue with Webster Groves School District leadership and interest in working toward constructive solutions for our schools and our community, the recall campaign will be stopped," said Cory Kleinschmidt, the recall's organizer.[2]

Recall supporters

Mueller was targeted for recall over his "Spend Wisely" campaign that opposed a pair of local school district propositions. "We think it's inappropriate for a public official to take a lead role in actively organizing and funding a campaign to oppose an initiative to support the public schools," said Kleinschmidt.[1]

Response by Mueller

Mueller called the petition against him "revengeful" and not a proper use of public energy and expense. He also dismissed any alleged involvement in the campaign against the propositions, saying "I only funded the educational information with my name on it. Nothing else."[1]

Arguments against recall

An editorial in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch criticized Kleinschmidt for wrongly placing the blame of the propositions' failure on Mueller. George Kleine wrote:

If Cory Kleinschmidt is intent on blaming someone, blame the 58 percent of the voters that showed up at the polls and soundly defeated yet another tax increase for all of us overtaxed Webster residents. Maybe five tax increases in 10 years finally didn't make much sense to the electorate. Maybe it's time for the School District to "go lean" like everyone else.

If Mr. Kleinschmidt really wants to waste $15,000 on a recall election, spend your own money and not the taxpayers' money. If he really wants to help out, raise $15,000 in donations and spend it on Webster Schools somewhere; they apparently are desperate and will take whatever he has to offer.

Meanwhile, leave Greg Mueller alone. All he did was spend his own money to pass along public information that is out there for anyone to see.[3][4]
