An effort in San Francisco, California, to recall Mayor Ed Lee from his position was launched in May 2016. Recall organizers submitted a notice of intent to circulate petitions on May 20, 2016.[1] The petition drive was delayed due to a San Francisco Department of Elections ruling that documents could not circulate until July 8, 2016, to comply with a six-month period between inauguration and signature gathering for a recall.

A second notice of intent to recall was filed on July 12, 2016.[2][3] The San Francisco Department of Elections approved a recall petition for circulation on October 12, 2016.[4] Recall organizers did not submit petitions by the filing deadline in March 2017.[5]

Recall supporters

A group called Frisco 5 pursued the recall of Ed Lee due to his handling of police shootings of civilians, tax incentives for businesses, and the city's homeless community. The group called for Lee's resignation on May 19, 2016, following the resignation of Police Chief Greg Suhr.[1]

California's recall process includes notification of intent to recall, publication of this notice, a seven-day response period for the targeted official or officials, and circulation of signatures. Organizers needed valid signatures from at least 47,565 registered voters in the city to require a recall election. This total equaled 10 percent of registered voters in the city in July 2016.[1][3] The deadline for organizers to submit signatures was March 18, 2017.[4]
