Valdez announced his intention to challenge incumbent Justice Greg Perkes (R) for a seat on the Texas Thirteenth District Court of Appeals in the 2016 elections. Valdez faced fellow Democrat Leticia Hinojosa in the Democratic primary. Valdez was defeated by Hinojosa, who will face Perkes in the general election.[3][4]
