Deborah Gist
Deborah Gist is a former Rhode Island Commissioner of Education. She was first appointed to the commissioner's position by the Rhode Island Board of Regents, which included the governor, on April 2, 2009, and took office on July 1, 2009. Gist's contract as Rhode Island's education commissioner ran through June 30, 2015. Following the expiration of her contract, Gist was appointed superintendent of Tulsa Public Schools in Oklahoma.[1][2][3]
Biography
Gist began her career teaching in Fort Worth, Texas, and later taught in Tampa, Florida. In Tampa, she founded a center on environmental education and initiated the Hillsborough Reads program. In both Fort Worth and Tampa, Gist won "Teacher of the Year" awards at her schools.[1]
In 2004, after eight years teaching in Texas and Florida, Gist was hired as the state education officer for the District of Columbia; from 2007–2009, she served as Washington D.C.'s first state superintendent of education. Gist left the position to become Rhode Island's state education commissioner.[4]
Gist has also worked as a senior policy analyst at the U.S. Department of Education and as director of marketing and development for the Discovery Creek Children's Museum.[5]
In 2010, Gist was named by TIME as one of the 100 people who most affect the world. Gist is married to LegiStorm founder and president Jock Friedly.[4][6]

Unanimously chosen to replace Dr. Keith Ballard by the board of education on February 2, 2015, Gist officially assumed the role on July 1, 2015. She was the first female superintendent in the district's history.[7]
