George Washington is my favorite American hero. He was a statesman, military leader, business owner, religious man, scientist, and a gentleman. He travelled amazingly long distances and never gave up.
Christian faith, because it contains all of the other important attributes.
Leadership skills, management skills, character, compassion.
Balance the dynamic tension between spending, supporting national objectives, and watching out for the constituents of their district.
Excellence in government.
When at the Naval Academy in 1974 I led the hat toss as class president with President Nixon sitting behind me on the stage.
I baled hay in the summertime for the farmer across the street in central NJ. It was hot, it gave me experience driving tractors, and I made $1 per hour. I got confidence throwing hay bales high on the hay wagon and unloading them in a very large hot barn right to the ceiling.
The Bible. It contains all the information we need here on earth for almost any subject.
They are closest to the people, have the power of the purse, and have both national and local constituencies.
Fiscal responsibility - spending and taxation in a constitutional and sustainable way.
The two-year election cycle provides the opportunity for term limits, but unfortunately the electorate does not want to vote out incumbents so they remain for very long periods. I can support term limit legislation.
