Sumner completed a survey conducted by the Lakeshore Weekly News:

What is your view of the state of the school district?

I am proud that the Minnetonka School District is an exceptional district, known for its excellence in education. Our student achievement continues to reach new heights. The Minnetonka School teachers, staff and administration are the best in their fields. Each year, the bar continues to get higher for what the Minnetonka School District can achieve. The success of our schools is reflected in the Minnetonka community and has created a wonderful support for our kids and schools. The district offers a wide range of programs that maximize the learning of every student. And the Minnetonka District has become known for being a leader in innovation by bringing some very exciting newness into our schools to give our students the greatest advantages to prepare them as they move forward in their academic and personal achievement.

What is the biggest issue facing your district right now?

The major challenge we face in the Minnetonka School District surrounds securing our financial future. The state funding for education has not kept up with the rate of inflation. Therefore, in this election our district has a critical referendum renewal on the ballot. Renewing both the Operating Referendum and the Technology Referendum are necessary to maintain our district’s excellence. As a district, we have been fiscally responsible and the renewal of these funds is extremely important to be able to continue to provide all the fantastic programs in our schools. The Minnetonka School District has done a tremendous job achieving high student performance with relatively low costs, by making solid decisions of where to spend our funds. I hope that our taxpayers will understand the importance of passing these referendums for our students benefit.

What skills and expertise will you contribute to the school board?

My experience in all the various levels and areas of our School District has given me a great background for being a school board member. I have volunteered from ECFE days to now spending weekly time in the High School’s College Career Center. In addition, my professional career has provided a strong skillset for me to be an effective board member. I have solid problem solving and analytical skills. I enjoy strategic planning and I am an effective communicator. I have always been a strong advocate for public schools and a supporter of forward and innovative planning.

Why are you running?

I am running because it has been a great experience serving on the Minnetonka School Board for the past four years. I would like to continue this service for another term, working on finding innovative ways to keep our district fiscally sound, maintaining the best & brightest teaching staff and continuing to make sure that at all levels our kids have the curriculum they need to be successful. I have been a part of the district through administration changes, two referendum votes and legislative lobbying, working toward a better funding solution for our schools. I look forward to continuing my work on the board as a way to give back to this wonderful community. My family has been well served by the Minnetonka Schools, and I have been and will continue to be dedicated to helping in our schools to make sure that all kids have a good experience.

Why should you be elected?

I hope that my background of serving on the Board for the past 4 years would be reason for my reelection. We have a great school district, and our community continually shares their feedback in the Annual Parent Survey, that they are very pleased with the results that our schools are providing for our students and that they have high overall satisfaction with the district. I would like to continue to maintain the excellence of our district and I will work hard in my next term to make sure we exceed our student’s needs and our community’s expectations.[3]
