Candidate Connection

Michael Christopher Steiner completed Ballotpedia's Candidate Connection survey. The survey questions appear in bold and are followed by Steiner's responses.

What would be your top three priorities, if elected?

1.) Protecting the Scituate Reservoir and our natural resources from outside interests 2.) Improved educational opportunities and job training for all students 3.) Transparency and open communication in government

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?

Veteran advocacy is a passion of mine as a military veteran. I feel obligated to help those who have chosen to wear the uniform in support of our country both personally and professionally. I also feel passionately about voting rights and accessibility to voting. It should be easy to vote, not a difficulty.

What characteristics or principles are most important for an elected official?

Elected officials should never shame a consistuent for asking why they voted a certain way on legislation or for not attending a vote. They also should be transparent in their processes, and keep an open door policy. Being active in the community and making sure consistuents know where to find them easily is important.

What do you believe are the core responsibilities for someone elected to this office?

State represenatives need to truly represent their home communities. They must be pro-active in seeing what legislation is being introduced to the House that could affect their consistuency, and be willing to work with other legislatiors to advocate for them. They need to be in the community and treat the position as a full time job, not just something to go to for a hobby.

What legacy would you like to leave?

I want to empower and encourage people in my community to become leaders.

What was your very first job? How long did you have it?

I was a clerk at Brigido's IGA in town. I worked there for two years in high school until I graduated and joined the serivce.

Every state besides Nebraska has two legislative chambers. What do you consider the most important differences between the legislative chambers in your state?

The House tends to introduce foundational legislation that the Senate then tweaks before passage to the Governor.

What do you perceive to be your state’s greatest challenges over the next decade?

Our state needs to retain young talent while caring for an aging population.

Do you believe it’s beneficial to build relationships with other legislators? Please explain your answer.

Without caucusing with other legislators on items that benefit our communities, it is difficult if not impossible to pass legislation. Building relationships with other legislators where their goals intersect is important and would only strengthen the ability of a legislator to get things accomplished.

If you are not a current legislator, are there certain committees that you would want to be a part of?

I would enjoy working on the Judiciary, Finance, Corporations, and Veterans' Affairs Committees.
