New York City held elections for mayor, public advocate, comptroller, and all 51 seats on the city council in 2017. New Yorkers also voted for offices in their boroughs: The Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens, and Staten Island.

Primary elections were scheduled for September 12, 2017, and the general election was on November 7, 2017. Under New York law, candidates who run unopposed in a primary or general election win the nomination or election automatically, and their names do not appear on the ballot.[3] Incumbent Mark Treyger (D) defeated Raimondo Denaro (R) in the general election for the District 47 seat on the New York City Council.

Campaign themes

2017

Denaro's campaign website highlighted the following issues:

Education

  • Expand STEM Summer Programs to all students. Regardless if they attend public, parochial or private schools.
  • Improve parent to teacher relationships by allowing parents to see how their children are performing several times a semester rather than once or twice a year or during report card season.
  • Enhance meal plans for children. Include more locally grown vegetables. Less packaged and processed food with preservatives.
  • Youth education, recovery & intervention programs on drug use.

Public Safety

  • Harsher punishments for hate crimes which have seen a near 60% increase.
  • Harsher punishments for drug possession & low quantity trafficking. Drug related deaths especially in our neighborhood has reached unprecedented levels.
  • More undercover police presence in local parks. Parks have seen a 32% increase in crimes including the murder in Owl’s Head Park in neighboring Bay Ridge.
  • Increased police presence in train stations & trains itself, especially during later hours.
  • Mandatory use of body cameras for police officers. To ensure both citizens and cops are being treated fairly and with respect.

Parking

  • Reduce commercial parking zones to 8AM-5PM. Increase restrictions on commercial vehicles on residential blocks.
  • Change to 90 degree parking on avenues with adequate spacing to increase the number of parking spots.
  • Paint lines on all streets to designate parking spots. This will help eliminate people who try and take up two parking spots.
  • Eliminate the use of Citi Bike docking stations on streets. Instead use sidewalks and public spaces to dock bikes.
  • Prohibit yellow and green taxi cabs from being able to park on residential streets.

Commuting

  • Immediately audit the MTA and finally get a freeze on fare increases. Why are we paying more for a service that fails to get upgraded or work?
  • Demand shuttle bus service to the nearest available train station when multiple stations are closed.
  • Coming from a background of Construction Management I know about proper sequencing that should be factored into projects to not disturb residents. I will ensure that construction on train tracks will not occur at multiple stations running in the same direction. It's common sense!
  • The signal system the MTA is currently using is over 80 years old! It also is the cause of 15% of train traffic. I will demand that with the budget money allocated to the MTA that they will immediately upgrade this antiquated system with modern technology.

Quality of Life

  • Address the increasing homeless population issues by utilizing NYCHA properties to house the homeless instead of having them reapply for a shelter every single day.
  • Appoint a new department within the DOB to be solely responsible for investigating possible illegal home conversions.
  • Appoint a neighborhood specific graffiti and trash removal service.
  • Encourage community groups to 'adopt a park' in our neighborhood to help clean our parks and address necessary repairs to the basketball courts, bocce ball courts, and park equipment.
  • Increase commercial and residential garbage collection.

Local Business

  • One of my biggest campaign focuses is bringing back local mom and pop shops to our neighborhood. They invigorate the community and can give high school kids summer jobs to gain some work experience and make some pocket money. With the rent prices across our neighborhood sky high its very difficult to start a small business here. My idea is to give a tax break to someone if they opened up a business within their zip code or immediate surrounding zip codes.

Seniors

  • Loosen limits on programs like the Senior Citizen Rent Increase Exemption.
  • Increase the quality of at home services for seniors and those who are disabled.[5]
