Candidate Connection

Robert Crook completed Ballotpedia's Candidate Connection survey. The survey questions appear in bold and are followed by Crook's responses.

What would be your top three priorities, if elected?

- Secure Social Security and Medicare - Balance The Federal Budget - Fix our infrastructure, especially our Cyber infrastructure

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?

Government Accountability

Who do you look up to? Whose example would you like to follow, and why?

True bi partisanship in a group like No Labels

Is there a book, essay, film, or something else you would recommend to someone who wants to understand your political philosophy?

John Kennedy - think not what your country can do for you, but what can do for your country

What characteristics or principles are most important for an elected official?

Honesty, Integrity and Compassion;Honesty, Integrity and Compassion

What qualities do you possess that you believe would make you a successful officeholder?

Ability to work with others and solve complex problems;Ability to work with others and solve complex problems

What do you believe are the core responsibilities for someone elected to this office?

Work with their constituents to improve their districts problems that need assistance from the Federal Government as well as partner with others in Congress for the good of the Country

What legacy would you like to leave?

That the Budget was balanced and a frame work to reduce government waste had been developed; That the Budget was balanced and a frame work to reduce government waste had been developed

What is the first historical event that happened in your lifetime that you remember? How old were you at the time?

The assination of Robert F. Kennedy. That people must stop fighting and start working together

What was your very first job? How long did you have it?

Public Accounting for a Big Eight Accounting firm for 7 years

What process do you favor for redistricting?

This should be done by an independent committee in each state, not by partisan forces that only care about re-election and their parties and not the public interests

Do you believe that it's beneficial for representatives to have previous experience in government or politics?

I beleive that we need to re-evalaute the skills that are required for someone seeking office, particularly given all the tax legislation, appropriations and long term funding issues relating to Social Security and Medicare. We need more CPA's and those that have a background in finance and accounting in Congress.

What do you perceive to be the United States’ greatest challenges as a nation over the next decade?

To be able to work together to fix the large and complex problems facing our country. I have experience working with people all over our Country, from all professions and all walks of life. I have worked directly for a member of the current Administration, John Bolton, National Scurity Advisor. John was an audit committee member of Diamond Offshore, which I was the Chief Audit Executive of for 10 years. I performed audits and investigations all over the world, including one of Petrobras, the Company that toppled the Brazilian government due to their kick back scandal, Operation Car Wash.

If you are not a current representative, are there certain committees that you would want to be a part of?

There needs to be more accountability over spending and waste in the federal budget. I am an advocate for cost containment audits and a long term capital spending plan to deal with the infrastructure issues we have as a country.

Do you believe that two years is the right term length for representatives?

I beleive that it is too short. I beleive in term limits though. Four years would be better. My understanding is that a large reason, nothing gets done is because, Congresspeople are always working on getting re-elected.

What are your thoughts on term limits?

We need them.

Both sitting representatives and candidates for office hear many personal stories from the residents of their district. Is there a story that you’ve heard that you found particularly touching, memorable, or impactful?

Almost every person I hear from tells me that NJ is becoming too expensive to live here and they are planning their exit strategy. We need to fight to bring jobs back to NJ, not fight about non issues that have already been settled. I believe there is a real ooportunity to build start-up Medical Research & Development jobs in the 11th Congressional district, given all the pharmaceutical employment and institutions of higher learning we have in NJ. Two research hospitals are being built in our district. We need to follow the lead of Mass. and NC which receive $2 & $1 billion, respectively, each year from HHS for medical research & development. NJ only receives $200 million and we can do much better than this, but we need congresspeople who understand finance & accounting, have expereince growing small business start-ups and can fight for the citizens of NJ instead of lining their own pockets. Adding low wage jobs at $15 an hour will not keep residents from moving out of NJ. We need higher paying jobs, and Medical Research & Development jobs are high paying jobs.
