William Kocher

William Kocher was the judge for the Ontario County Court and the Ontario County Family Court in New York. He was sworn in to this position on July 21, 2006. He was elected the following November to a full term that began in 2007. Kocher was re-elected in the general election on November 8, 2016. He retired at the end of 2018.[1]
He was also appointed the supervising judge for the justice courts of the 6th Judicial District in 2010.[2][3]
Education
Kocher received his B.S. from Indiana University in 1970 and his J.D. from Cornell Law School in 1973.[2]
Career
Kocher began his career in 1974 as a private practice lawyer and a part-time assistant Ontario County district attorney. He worked as a lawyer until 2006 and as an assistant D.A. until 1991. He also worked as a village attorney for Victor, New York, from 1978 to 2006. In addition, he served as an elected town justice for the Victor Town Court from 1991 until he joined the county court in 2006. He also served briefly in 2006 as an acting justice in the New York Supreme Court 7th Judicial District.[2][3]

New York held general elections for local judicial offices on November 8, 2016. A primary election was held on September 13, 2016. The filing deadline for candidates who wish to run in this election was July 14, 2016.[4] William Kocher ran unopposed in the Ontario County Court Seat 1 general election.[5]

Selection method

The 125 judges of the New York County Courts are elected to 10-year terms in partisan elections. To appear on the ballot, candidates must be chosen at partisan nominating conventions. Sitting judges wishing to serve an additional term must run for re-election.[6]
Qualifications
To join this court, a judge must:[6]
- be a state resident;
- be a county resident;
- have had at least five years of in-state law practice;
- be at least 18 years old; and
- be under the age of 70 (retirement at 70 is mandatory).
