Bartolotta completed a survey conducted by The Sun Current:

Q. Why are you seeking election to the Bloomington Board of Education?

I am seeking re-election because I believe Bloomington’s children deserve the best educational opportunities. A great school district is the foundation of a great community, and we know Bloomington is a great community that supports its public school system. I wish to see that tradition continue as a member of the school board that I have served for the past 12 years, four as chair. We have much to be proud of in our school system, but we face challenges that are best served by school board members who understand the issues.

Q. Are you satisfied with the board’s budget decisions for the 2015-16 school year?

I am satisfied because we made them as a school board after a lot of deliberation to understand the reasons, their impact on schools and staff, and how we must continue to operate within our means. We are experiencing a declining enrollment in the midst of a growing trend of greater student needs. Our challenge is to continue to address these needs, which offset any increases in new state revenue, with limited resources. Considering the alternative of significant budget cuts, we are fortunate to have grown our fund balance over the past few years to minimize the impact today. At the same time, we must continually evaluate ways to reduce expenses and still be innovative in our programming.

Q. What could the district do to better meet the needs of its students?

We continue to innovate because our world and student needs have changed. We need to continue to partner with community organizations to start and sustain innovative programs. This year, we opened the new Bloomington Career and College Academy, a unique program designed to support students actively pursuing a career path, job training or a college degree while completing their high school diploma. Students earn dual high school and college credits from partner community and technical colleges. I believe this type of program, which focuses on in-demand careers, will provide another pathway for students who may not yet know what their next step after high school is, but can find their own niche and leave our schools with a plan for success. We accomplished this by partnering with the Greater Twin Cities United Way and the Walser Foundation. This is the type of innovation that operates best when residents, businesses and organizations come together for students. Bloomington has no shortage of expertise and support for its kids, so the district can do more to tap into those resources.[2]
