Aims to

Ballotpedia:Index of Terms

The phrase aims to is used throughout Ballotpedia on a range of articles covering proposed legislation, policy proposals, the mission of organizations, and beyond. This phrase is used to summarize what the individual, the organization, or the idea (such as a law or a policy proposal) explicitly states that it sets out to do. Ballotpedia generally summarizes or explicitly quotes this information from the words of individuals, groups, legal texts, etc., themselves.

Ballotpedia provides information for readers about what a subject's aims are, in addition to information about the steps taken in order to achieve those aims. It should not be implied, therefore, that because an article states what a group or policy aims to do that Ballotpedia necessarily holds any view about whether that aim will be, can be, or has been achieved. In addition to providing information about what is explicitly stated as something an individual, group, or policy proposal aims to do, Ballotpedia attempts to curate information for readers showing what the individuals, groups, etc., have done in order to achieve those aims.

Organizations might, according to their website or mission statement, aim at a set of self-described objectives. Those objectives, as stated on the group's site or in its own words, are included in those organizations' articles on Ballotpedia. But articles also contain information on the specific steps an organization takes to achieve those aims. In practice, organizations might engage in additional, more specific activities of interest to readers, which better demonstrate how a group is putting its ideas into practice.
