Ande Allen Smith was a 2016 Republican candidate who sought election to the U.S. House to represent the 1st Congressional District of Maine.[1] Smith was defeated by Mark Holbrook in the Republican primary.[2]

Incumbent Chellie Pingree (D), who faced no primary opposition, defeated Mark Holbrook (R) and James Bouchard (L write-in) in the general election on November 8, 2016.   • Addiction: Our state is in the middle of an intense drug epidemic. Families are being torn apart, and lives are being ruined or lost forever. Addressing this crisis, and ensuring that our health care community, our police forces, and our loved ones have all the tools they need, must be a top priority. We cannot perpetrate the stigma of addiction, and simply hope that this problem will solve itself or go away.
  • Balancing the Budget: Families throughout the First District have learned to live within their means, and not spend more than they earn. Mainers know that they must stick to their budget, and prioritize their spending on the things they truly need. I believe that Congress should operate the same way — and use the same common-sense principles that we live by in the First District.
  • The Constitution: Washington insiders have seemingly forgotten about our founding document, and have long ignored the principles and protections that have given us a safe and secure way of life. When elected to Congress, I’ll vigorously defend our Constitution, and ensure that every law we pass passes Constitutional muster. I’ll use my legal and business experience to thoroughly examine every issue, and be the constitutional conservative that our district deserves.
  • Education: The two most important drivers of great education are (1) teachers who care; and (2) parents who view education as their child’s top priority. Our efforts should be focused on ensuring that our kids are being taught by great teachers and supporting parents’ efforts to promote the importance of education.
  • Energy: Maine currently has some of highest energy costs in the nation. Individuals and families are paying more to fuel their cars and heat their homes, and Maine businesses are forced to devote more of their resources to paying for energy. This leads to less money in your pocket, fewer jobs, and a stagnant economy that isn’t competitive on the world stage.
