I am a #DurhamNative, a Durham Public Schools graduate, a Black woman, a millennial, an entrepreneur, and a marine scientist. I am committed to using my experience, knowledge, the formal education I have been blessed to obtain, and my love for my hometown to connect with and promote advocacy for Durham County. I received my B.S. in Marine Science from Eckerd College in St. Petersburg, Florida, and I am currently a Ph.D. student at Duke University. Throughout my career, I have been awarded over 25 awards and scholarships and studied and conducted research at the most respected institutions in my discipline. My candidacy for District Supervisor of Durham County Soil & Water Conservation District is about more than bringing scientists, like myself, into policy and decision-making processes. It is also about increasing representation for people of Color and Black Women in environmental conservation fields. It is about being the representation I never saw in our environmental conservation leaders growing up, and it is about bringing new perspectives, ideas, and viewpoints to address the world's most pressing human health and environmental issues. In doing so, I aspire to build partnerships with influential organizations in environmental conservation fields to elevate the voices of the youth, people of color, and women, to ensure a diversity of views are incorporated into our efforts to create sustainable and equitable conservation strategies.
  • I am the most qualified candidate for this position for a number of reasons, some of which include my international expertise in this field and my extensive roots in Durham County. I am also deeply passionate about Durham and invested in the success of Durham County, as it is my home and has been my family's home for generations.
  • As a marine scientist, I have intensively studied these topics full-time; around water quality, natural resource management, and environmental conservation for the last 6 years. I have done so throughout the United States and internationally. I am also currently continuing my studies as a Ph.D. student at Duke University in the Nicholas School of the Environment, while also serving as an Associate Supervisors for the district.
  • As a #DurhamNative and a Durham Public Schools graduate, I have the connections, perspective and awareness needed to advocate for our communities and connect new and existing Soil & Water programs to those who would benefit from them the most, while introducing them to a wide array of residents of whom Soil & Water's programs could be augmented.
Education: Our education platform is focused on properly equipping generations and communities with the knowledge and resources necessary to make informed decisions on the management and conservation of Durham's natural resources. A few of the ways this will be accomplished are by; hiring an environmental education staffer, & employing Durham Public Schools students on environmental restoration projects.

Economic Development: With agriculture and agribusiness being the #1 industry in North Carolina, our Economic Development platform is focused on increasing urban agricultural and agribusiness opportunities in Durham County. We will accomplish this by; securing additional funding for financial assistance programs, expanding Farm-to-Table programs, and connecting farmers with essential technology.

Environmental Justice: Environmental racism is interwoven with the myriad of injustices that communities of color face and are connected to various pressing issues in Durham County (e.g. gun violence, food insecurity, health, and housing disparities). I will continue to fight for Environmental Justice for all of Durham's residents affected by environmental racism, as Environmental Justice is Economic Justice and Health Justice. I will work with our communities, especially marginalized communities, to develop sustainable solutions to ensure low-income and marginalized communities have equitable access to green spaces and combat food insecurities and water pollution.
The Soil & Water Conservation Districts are unique, in that they utilize local, state, and federal programs/partners, such as NRCS, DEQ, and the Department of Agriculture, to accomplish their goals. One of the reasons Soil & Water Conservation District exists was to create a venue for the Federal Government to invest in private landowners through local conservation districts. Additionally, Soil & Water districts are arms of the state, as our programs come from the Division, which is a state organization. Today, Durham County's Soil & Water Conservation District takes advantage of state and federal resources to 1) create programs, 2) offer financial assistance to landowners through cost-share programs, 3) complete environmental restoration projects throughout the county, and 4) implement educational programs for students and adults. However, I believe there are ways for our districts to better utilize these partnerships to accomplish our local goals and alleviate the workload of soil & water staff.
The Durham County Soil & Water Conservation District's interdisciplinary approach has been adopted to enhance, protect and conserve Durham County's natural resources. As a scientist, educator, and entrepreneur, interdisciplinary approaches based in equitable paradigms have always helped me through the broad paradoxical nature of my interests and training. I learned early on to understand, respect and hold in a constant creative tension the importances of tackling issues using an interdisciplinary approach that involves science, education, economics, and an understanding how they all hold up against the backdrop of our economy and how they are personalized within our own individual lives.

The Durham County Soil & Water Conservation District maintains its stance addressing interdisciplinary objectives & concepts at the intersection of human health and natural resource management. It will always be crucial for our District Supervisors to be centered in this interdisciplinary work, as I do.
