Pop Quiz Answer

Ballot measures are questions or issues that appear on ballots for voters to approve or reject. They can be local or statewide, are initiated in different ways, and are not widely used in every state.

In one state that often uses ballot measures, three advisory questions were referred to the 2017 ballot by the state legislature. However, no citizen-initiated measures were certified to appear on the state’s ballot this year—the first year this has happened since 1985.

Today's special pop quiz asked: Which state was it? You selected from the following choices.

The correct answer was Washington. Three legislatively referred measures on taxes will appear on the ballot on November 7, 2017. None of the citizen initiatives filed made it to the 2017 ballot—the first time no citizen initiatives have appeared on the ballot in over 30 years.

In New Jersey and Virginia, ballot measures are referred by the state legislature. Arizona allows citizen-initiated ballot measures, but no ballot measure elections are scheduled this year.
