#FridayFact Answer

Between 1987 and 2017, there were at least 25 special elections in the U.S. Senate and 130 in the U.S. House. In 40 percent of those U.S. Senate elections and 21 percent of those U.S. House elections, the winner was from a different political party than his or her predecessor.

This week's #FridayFact asked: Which state has seen the most Congressional special election flips? You selected from the following choices.

  • Illinois
  • New York
  • Texas
  • California

The correct answer was California. Between 1987 and 2017, 20 California Congressional seats have changed party hands in special elections. Of those, four seats flipped from Democratic to Republican, and 16 seats flipped from Republican to Democratic.
