Candidate Connection

Bert Allen Bronaugh Jr participated in Ballotpedia's candidate survey on April 8, 2018. The survey questions appear in bold, and Bert Allen Bronaugh Jr's responses follow below.[1]

What would be your top three priorities, if elected?

1) Student achievement

2) Student safety
3) Support of our teachers and staff.[2][3]

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about? Why?

Support of our public schools, teachers and staff and advocating for the financial support from the State of Texas.Cite error: Invalid <ref> tag; invalid names, e.g. too many[3]

Ballotpedia also asked the candidate a series of optional questions. Bert Allen Bronaugh Jr answered the following:

Who do you look up to? Whose example would you like to follow, and why?

Personally, related to the School Board position, Ralph Pfluger is one of the people that I look up to. He was a long term trustee that put the children first and still does. He made hard decisions that were done for our school children, then stood behind those decisions. I would like to be as strong of a trustee as he was. I also look to up to my Mother, who was a teacher. Her patience and encouragement for all the children that she interacted with will always be a milemark for me.[3]
Is there a book, essay, film, or something else you would recommend to someone who wants to understand your political philosophy?
Stand and Deliver'. To me, this movie shows the idea that if we, as the school district, support and bolster our teachers, they will succeed in the goal of educating our future leaders. Our teachers do their job for the students, we need to support them.[3]
What characteristics or principles are most important for an elected official?
Honesty, integrity and accessibility.[3]
What qualities do you possess that you believe would make you a successful officeholder?
I am a long time resident of this area. I have four children that have all attended Hays CISD. I am very active in many aspect of the community, so I am in touch with the needs and desires of the area.[3]
What do you believe are the core responsibilities for someone elected to this office?
To make every decision based on the best thing for the children.[3]
What was your very first job? How long did you have it?
I started working for my Grandfather on his cotton farm in south Texas at the age of 8. I started off 'packing cotton trailers' and hand picking the areas that the picker/stripper couldn't get into. My Grandfather and I would also chop cotton (hoe the weeds out of the fields) when necessary. It really gave me good work ethics and an understanding of the importance of every worker.[3]
If you could be any fictional character, who would you want to be?
Dirk Pitt, not the movie version but the book version. The reason is that he's just an average person, with some character flaws, but always gets the job done, even though it's sometimes not the expected way.[3]
What is the primary job of a school board member in your view?
To represent the constituents viewpoints on items related to the education of our districts students[3]
Who are your constituents?
I am elected by the voters in District 3, but I am an advocate for all the Hays CISD residents.[3]
How would you support the diverse needs of your district’s students, faculty, staff, and community?
I will support the District's needs by researching the issues, both at hand and on the horizon, taking input from the community, staying well informed and making decisions based on the facts, keeping the goal of our children's education and safety as a first priority.[3]
What will you do to build a better relationship with parents in the district? What plans do you have to be inclusive of parental involvement?
I am involved with some local organizations, and will do my best to participate in school functions and activities, specifically PTA and parent functions.[3]
What principles drive your policies for safety in schools?
We need to stay ahead of anyone that would intentionally try to harm our students. We have a wonderful team of Student Resource Officers and a great relationship with our local law enforcement. Between those two, and and administration that knows the importance of safety, I believe we will do our best to stay prepared.[3]
How might you support the mental health needs of students/faculty/staff?
Our SHAC, Student Health Advisory Committee, is already addressing that. This is a very pro-active group that has some very sound ideas, and carries these ideas to the Board on a regular basis. I support this group, and look to their knowledge and research in supporting both the mental and physical health of our students.[3]
