Three seats on the Brazosport Board of Trustees were up for general election on May 10, 2014. Incumbent George R. Sullivan won a full term in the District 1 seat against Troy T. Brimage. Scott Schwertner defeated fellow challenger Ryan Huey for the District 6 seat held by outgoing trustee Jim Koch. Koch did not file for re-election by the February 28, 2014 deadline. District 7 incumbent Mason Howard won another term without opposition.

Brazosport Independent School District is located in Clute, Texas, a city located in Brazoria County. According to the United States Census Bureau, Clute was home to 11,282 residents in 2014.[1] Brazosport Independent School District was the 87th-largest school district in Texas, serving 12,551 students during the 2011-2012 school year.[2]

Demographics

Clute underperformed in comparison to the rest of Texas in terms of higher education achievement in 2010. The United States Census Bureau found that 10.4 percent of Clute residents aged 25 years and older had attained a bachelor's degree compared to 26.3 percent for Texas as a whole. The median household income in Clute was $40,790 compared to $51,563 for the state of Texas. The poverty rate in Clute was 20.4 percent compared to 17.4 percent for the entire state.[1]

Voter and candidate information

The Brazosport Board of Trustees consists of seven members elected to three-year terms. There was no primary election and a general election took place on May 10, 2014. Two seats were on the ballot in May 2015 and two seats were up for election in May 2016.[4]

Candidates for the Board of Trustees submitted paperwork with the school district secretary by February 28, 2014. Each candidate must be at least 18 years old, a registered voter and a resident of the district for at least six months. Members filed two campaign finance reports with the district clerk prior to the election unless they do not receive or spend $500 during the campaign.[4]

Issues in the district

Teacher's inappropriate relationship with student

Former teacher Nikki Schwertz was sentenced in February 2014 to 10 years of probation and a $5,000 fine for engaging in an inappropriate relationship with a Brazosport High School student. Schwertz resigned from the school in 2013 after administrators investigated rumors of her relationship with a 16-year old student. The sentence was reduced from a prison sentence due to the age of the student and Schwertz's apologies to his parents and school officials.[5]
