Kozlowicz included the following statement on her campaign page:[3]
“ | I am honored to announce my candidacy for Waukesha school board!
I would like to thank everyone who signed my nomination papers. 100 plus signatures may not seem like a lot, but it was in sub-zero temperatures! I enjoyed meeting with many of you and hearing about your experience in the school district (some even at 2 a.m.!). There are four outstanding candidates vying for three positions for the April 3, 2018 election. I have worked behind the scenes in Waukesha, helping parents, children and families understand and navigate with the school system. Through my 12-plus year tenure at a literacy organization located in Waukesha, I created the Burmese Family Literacy program and created connections with many of the schools in recruiting students and working with volunteers. With many outstanding volunteers, my former boss and wonderful literacy supporters, I was able to develop more than 26 different programs by expanding the definition of literacy I have heard so many stories of people’s experience with the school district; I want to help make an already outstanding school district thrive. My leadership style is that I strive to make everyone around me successful. I started a non-profit organization, Literacy For All, Inc. because of the increased literacy need in Waukesha, Milwaukee and other counties in Southeast, Wisconsin. I started this due to an excellent board of directors from scratch, and in Waukesha County, we work primarily with adults, and we helped many, many people already with wealth management, college and career readiness and advanced literacy skills. Through tireless working on starting a nonprofit organization (with a wonderful board, contract staff and supporters), I will bring public relations, fund development and volunteer management skills to a school board position. Other experiences: - Taught English Language Learners at a private school (Milwaukee) and taught Spanish in a Charter School (Eugene, Oregon) - Covered school board meetings at other municipalities for local newspapers (familiar with issues and have knowledge of different districts). - Certified grant writer (can write smaller grants for newspapers) - Certified National ProLiteracy Tutor Trainer - Taught and wrote grants in a 100 percent Spanish- speaking environment - Consistent freelance writer for The Freeman, participated in the Southeast Festival of Books and Waukesha Reads-NEA Big Read I am passionate about creating and building on an empowering environment for teachers, parents and students. I care about staff empowerment and support 30/90 surveys for new staff and students and want teachers and parents to have a forum to have a voice in the school district. If teachers and school staff are not treated well and not supported, it is hard to support students and families. I am finding is that many parents, who are educated or did well in school in their past, often feel they don’t know how to help their children with their homework. Parents are confused with the changes in curriculum and are frustrated. I feel there should be better communication on curriculum changes; I can help create media awareness, write copy for the website or help with parent informational newsletters. I am passionate about college and career readiness programs. I would like to see that expanded. Technical education is important; I agree. I would like students, who are good at writing explore careers in editing, public relations writing or grant writing. I would like to see more expansion of the programs. Also, bullying of any kind needs to end - adults, families or kids in the district. Everyone should love being in their school. There are a lot of other issues I see very important! I will be posting on Facebook and will be releasing the website soon. I look forward to meeting with all of you, hearing your views on the school district and meeting and empowering the other three outstanding candidates. I will provide 'A unique perspective for everyone to be successful!' Please feel free to like my Facebook page Cathy Kozlowicz for Waukesha School Board and check out the updates! [4] |
