Mission

The website for the Center on Education Policy lists the following mission statement:[1]

The Center on Education Policy is a national, independent advocate for public education and for more effective public schools. The Center helps Americans better understand the role of public education in a democracy and the need to improve the academic quality of public schools. We do not represent any special interests. Instead, we try to help citizens make sense of the conflicting opinions and perceptions about public education and create the conditions that will lead to better public schools.[3]

Work

The Center on Education Policy is focused on improving public schools throughout the United States. They aim to achieve these goals "by producing publications, convening meetings, making presentations, and, upon request, providing expert advice."[4] Ed Week noted that the group chiefly engages policy issues through public discussions of public education, saying that the group has convened "forums on the No Child Left Behind Act, community forums on public education, and conferences on virtual schools, social promotion and other policy issues. CEP also provides technical assistance to the states for their school improvement efforts."[5]

Much of their research from 2015 focused on testing, including a report on the effects of the government on testing and what impacts the Common Core State Standards Initiative would have on testing. The group also works to bridge policy and classroom activity through its research. They have published a number of reports on the use of policy research for everyday teacher duties.[6]
