Chris Magnus was the commissioner of the U.S. Customs and Border Protection in the Biden administration. President Joe Biden (D) announced on April 12, 2021, that he had selected Magnus as his nominee for the position.[1] The Senate confirmed his nomination 50-47 on December 7, 2021.[2] Magnus resigned from the position on November 12, 2022.[3]
The White House said in a statement, "His lengthy career in public safety includes coming up through the ranks of the Lansing, Michigan Police Department, and serving as police chief in the cities of Fargo, North Dakota, Richmond, California, and Tucson, Arizona. In each of these cities Magnus developed a reputation as a progressive police leader who focused on relationship-building between the police and community, implementing evidence-based best practices, promoting reform, and insisting on police accountability."[1]
Biography
Magnus received a bachelor's degree in criminal justice and a master's degree in labor relations from Michigan State University. He also attended a senior executive program on government at the Harvard Kennedy School.[4]
Magnus began working in public safety in 1979 as a dispatcher in Lansing, Michigan. He also worked as a pracademic and deputy sheriff. Magnus joined the Lansing Police Department as a police officer in 1985, where he worked as a police officer for 15 years.[4]
He became the police chief in Fargo, North Dakota, in 1999. According to his official biography, Magnus was involved with "implementing the first two-state regional dispatch system in the nation, a forensic children’s interview center, and a refugee liaison program for the area’s many new immigrants and refugees."[4]
In 2006, Magnus became the police chief for Richmond, California, serving there for 10 years. In 2016, he was appointed the police chief for Tucson, Arizona.[4]
