Toombs ran in the 2011 election for Louisiana Senate District 14. He faced incumbent Yvonne Dorsey (D) and Michael Jackson (D) in the primary election on October 22, 2011. Because Louisiana uses a blanket primary system, a candidate can be declared the overall winner of the seat by garnering 50 percent +1 of the vote in the primary. Dorsey won with over 50 percent +1 votes.[1]

Races to watch

On September 12, 2011, Bayou Buzz issued a report on the top five Louisiana Senate races to watch. The race between Dorsey, Jackson and Toombs was ranked as number 3. The report cites Dorsey as not accomplishing much in the legislature, while Jackson has raised his profile. Jackson, it notes, would not be a solid Democratic vote, which Dorsey has been.[2]
