A look at how the cost of eggs differs across the country + results from New Hampshire
The Daily Brew

Welcome to the Wednesday, September 12 Brew. Here’s what’s in store for you as you start your day:

  1. The price of a dozen eggs has a variation of over $4 depending on your state
  2. Chris Pappas (D) and Eddie Edwards (R) win their primaries in New Hampshire's 1st Congressional District
  3. Tonight: Smallest state has big primaries

What’s the cost of a dozen eggs in your state?

In the latest installment of our project detailing the costs of various government services and consumer products in the 50 states, our team looked at the cost of eggs. Specifically, we determined the cost of one dozen large, grade-A eggs in each state capital. In order to ensure comparable data, all prices, unless otherwise noted in the table below, came from Wal-Mart.

Here are some highlights:

  • As of August 2018, the price of one dozen eggs ranged from $0.42 in Illinois to $4.49 in Hawaii.
  • The price of one dozen eggs was less than $1.00 in 11 states. The price per dozen was between $1.00 and $1.99 in 34 states and Washington, D.C.
  • In five states, the price of one dozen eggs equaled or exceeded $2.00: Alaska, California, Hawaii, Louisiana, and Vermont.

General election candidates set in this New Hampshire swing district

Democratic primary

Executive Councilor Chris Pappas won the Democratic primary for New Hampshire's 1st Congressional District. He received 52 percent of the vote with 32 percent of precincts reporting. Former Assistant Secretary of Veterans Affairs Maura Sullivan was second with 27 percent.

Eleven candidates ran in the race. Sullivan raised $1.8 million—more than twice as much as any other candidate. Pappas raised $820,000.

Pappas contrasted himself with Sullivan by saying that most of his donors are from New Hampshire. Sullivan said she gained supporters through her work in the Marines and as assistant secretary of Veterans Affairs under Obama.

Healthcare policy also divided the 11-candidate field. Pappas was among the candidates who supported allowing people to buy into Medicare as a method of expanding healthcare access, while other challengers supported Medicare for all.

Pappas' other policy priorities include tuition-free college and opposing restrictions on abortion.

Republican primary

Former police chief Eddie Edwards defeated four candidates in New Hampshire's 1st Congressional District Republican primary. With 70 percent of precincts reporting, he had 48 percent of the vote; in second place was state Sen. Andy Sanborn with 41 percent.

Sanborn and Edwards both had high-profile endorsements; Sens. Rand Paul and Ted Cruz backed Sanborn, and Edwards had the support of former NYC Mayor Rudy Giuliani and former Sen. Rick Santorum.

Edwards campaigned on his history in law enforcement and argued that he has the character and integrity needed in Congress. Sanborn emphasized his record of voting to lower taxes in the state Senate.

Edwards' experience includes serving as director of the New Hampshire Liquor Commission Enforcement Division and owning Eddie Edwards Consulting, which works with small businesses on regulatory compliance.

General election

The swing district has changed partisan hands five times in the last six elections, and the general election is expected to be competitive. The current incumbent, Rep. Carol Shea-Porter (D), is retiring.

Tonight: Smallest state has big primaries

Here are two races we are watching in Rhode Island’s primary contests.

Incumbent RI Gov. Raimondo faces progressive primary challenge

  • Incumbent Gov. Gina Raimondo (D) faces a primary challenge from the left in her re-election bid. Former Secretary of State Matt Brown is backed by progressive groups such as Our Revolution RI and Justice Democrats, while Raimondo has been endorsed by several local unions and Democratic committees. Raimondo has campaigned on economic improvements in the state during her tenure. Brown has criticized her approach to bringing businesses to the state such as providing tax credits, and he calls for raising taxes on large corporations.

Rhode Island state legislative Democratic primaries

  • The state Democratic Party or a local Democratic committee endorsed challengers over state Sen. Jeanne Calkin and state Reps. Moira Walsh, Marcia Ranglin-Vassell, and Ramon Perez. The state party also backed former state Sen. Gregory Acciardo over Bridget Valverde in an open Senate primary (the state party later withdrew its endorsements of Acciardo and Michael Earnhart, who is challenging Walsh). Calkin, Walsh, Ranglin-Vassell, and Valverde all support abortion access while other Rhode Island Democrats, including House Speaker Nicholas Mattiello oppose access to legalized abortion.

Rhode Island is holding its statewide primary election today. We are covering elections for one U.S. Senate seat, two U.S. House seats, five state executive positions including governor and lieutenant governor, all 38 state senate seats, and all 75 state house seats. The primary winners will advance to the general election that will be held on November 6, 2018. Polls will be open on election day from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.
