Daniel Burrell Merritt, Jr. is a Citrus and Hernando County judge of the Fifth Judicial Circuit Court in Florida. He was elected to this position in November of 2006 and took office the following January 2. He was re-elected in 2012 and his current term expires in January of 2019.[1][2]

His father, Daniel B. Merritt, Sr. is a judge of the same circuit court.[3]

Biography and Education

Merritt was born in Sulphur, LA, but grew up in Hernando County, FL. He received his undergraduate degree from the University of Tennessee at Martin and his law degree from the Cumberland School of Law at Samford University.[4]

Career

Merritt began his career working summers (from 1988 to 1990) as a law clerk with his dad at Merritt and Mason. He became a private practice lawyer in 1997 and worked in that capacity until he was elected to the circuit court in 2006. He also served as a volunteer judge for the Teen Court from 1992.[4]

2012 election

Merritt was unopposed and automatically re-elected following the primary election on August 14, 2012.[5]
