Three seats on the Douglas Board of Education were up for general election on November 4, 2014. The election was for Districts 2, 3 and 4.
District 2 incumbent D.T. Jackson was unopposed in the primary election on May 20, 2014, and won re-election unopposed in the general election. Republican incumbent Sam Haskell won against challenger Lauren McCoy in the primary but was defeated by Democrat Michelle Simmons in the general election. District 3 incumbent Janet Kelley, a Republican, also lost to Democratic challenger Tracy Rookard in November. Both had been unopposed in the primary.

Douglas County School System is located in Douglas County, Georgia. The county seat of Douglas County is Douglasville. Douglas County is home to 132,403 residents, according to the United States Census Bureau.[1] Douglas County School System was the 16th-largest school district in Georgia, serving 25,668 students during the 2013-2014 school year.[2]
Demographics
Douglas County underperformed in comparison to the rest of Georgia in terms of higher education achievement and overperformed in terms of median household income in 2012. The United States Census Bureau found that 24.8 percent of Douglas County residents aged 25 years and older had attained a bachelor's degree compared to 27.8 percent for Georgia as a whole. The median household income in Douglas County was $54,526 compared to $49,604 for the state of Georgia. The poverty rate in Douglas County was 13.4 percent compared to 17.4 percent for the entire state.[1]

Voter and candidate information
The Douglas County Board of Education is a partisan board that consists of five members elected to four-year terms. They serve by geographic district. There was a primary election on May 20, 2014 and the general election was held on November 4, 2014. Three seats were up for election in 2014, and two seats will be up for election in 2016.[4]
Candidates began to file affidavits of candidacy on March 3, 2014. The filing deadline for school board candidates to get on the ballot in the general election was March 7, 2014.[5]

Additional elections on the ballot
The school board election shared the ballot with county, state and national primary elections on May 20, 2014. The primary ballot included races for Georgia House of Representatives and Georgia State Senate. There were also state executive elections including races for governor, lieutenant governor and attorney general. The May 20, 2014, election selected candidates for seats in the U.S. House of Representatives and U.S. Senate.[6]
