Campaign themes

2016

Smith's campaign website highlighted the following issues:

Energy Policy

I believe we should work towards eliminating fossil fuels as an energy source, so they can be utilized elsewhere or left undisturbed. This way, we can use both large and small scale solar to offset the fossil fuel footprint in our energy matrix as Nevada moves forward. Distributed generation (rooftop small scale solar) will allow us to grow in the short term, without making huge infrastructure build out; we should make it possible for individual Nevadans to produce their own solar energy and contribute it to the grid. I am not opposed to opening the market up to additional energy providers.

Living Wage & Social Services

Nevada’s minimum wage must become a living wage that will allow hard working citizens to support their families in dignity. We must ensure that no one working full time lives in poverty. It’s an investment in our community, in our economy, and in our future.

Taxes

Nevadans have been asking for a fair tax system for years. For too long, we have taxed narrow segments of the population, allowed certain industries to enjoy special exemptions, and permitted small businesses to struggle with little assistance or incentive.

There are those who seek to repeal our recent tax increases, but they do so without examining the repercussions. We must find a way to properly fund state expenditures. I will not consider a tax cut without first finding a funding solution.

Second Amendment & Gun Safety

I believe we should institute universal background checks for every gun sale in the state of Nevada. Unregulated gun show and straw purchases undermine the safety of our children, and put guns into the hands of potential criminals. I believe the only safe unregulated transfer of firearms is as a gift between family members; all other transfers of ownership must be subject to background checks.

Education Funding

I believe we must lighten the burden of student debt, while encouraging graduates to stay and contribute their skills within our communities.

I propose a new program that permits Nevada students to secure funding from Nevada institutions to support career development at Nevada colleges and universities. In exchange for reduced student loan rates or debt forgiveness, the graduates agree to remain and work in Nevada for two years per year of school financed.[1]
