Campaign themes

2014

On her campaign website, McGann highlighted the following issues:[1]

Infrastructure

  • Excerpt: "My main focus for Austin is our infrastructure. We are growing at an incredible pace, without acknowledging the need for improvements in our infrastructure. As most people in Austin know, I-35 and Mopac are parking lots for much of rush hour. State and Interstate highway improvement requires the input of state and federal approval and funds, while the local roads, water, and electric systems do not. Locally, we should encourage or even require new builds to have solar power or rain water collection. We can reduce water waste by improving and replacing the pipes from the treatment plant to our homes. In order to accommodate the increasing number of people migrating to Austin every day."

Water

  • Excerpt: "Water. Water is the great elixir of life and we do not have enough here in Austin. Despite touting Austin as a green city, there are limitations and excessive permitting on the installation of rain water systems. There was a time when this was needed to prevent a back flow of water into the city water, but the systems are much more advanced now and the threat of that happening is all but eradicated. Rain water systems would allow people to still grow plants and trees and remove some of the issues water restrictions can cause."

Transportation

  • Excerpt: "Public transportation is another hot button topic in Austin right now. How do we get the biggest bang for our buck? Currently we have not built the infrastructure (that word again!) to functionally support the trains we have, yet we are talking about investing over 1 billion in more train systems. Currently the parking lots for the trains are full, people are parking around the edges of the lots, and there is no room for growth. There are not enough connecting transportation resources, buses, taxis or bike kiosks, for people to get from the train to their destination. There are not sidewalks, lights or cross walks out side some train stops making the walk to work dangerous. We cannot live a “Field of Dreams” life- if we build it, and don’t have supporting infrastructure, they will not come!"

Housing

  • Excerpt: "The City of Austin also recently passed a bill requiring all new builds starting in 2015 be built to ADA standards, although I agree that people with disabilities need housing access, not all disabilities are the same, or need the same access. Housing in Austin is already very expensive, and this will create an added expense to housing. There are nonprofit organizations that can and do retrofit houses for ADA compliance for little or no cost."

Business

  • Excerpt: "Erin supports local business. Erin will strive to reduce the money being spent courting national businesses to zero and increase the amount being spent promoting local business by that amount (in the millions) Austin has great local business that can draw tourist dollars, You can go to any city in the country to shop at Barnes and Noble, but you can only shop at Book People in Austin. Local business employes local people, keeps more money in the community and is more supportive of community endeavors. Local business makes us Austin!"

The city of Austin held elections for city council on November 4, 2014. The candidate filing deadline was August 18, 2014. Because of redistricting and term limits, there was no incumbent for District 9.[2] The candidates were Erin K. McGann, Chris Riley and Kathie Tovo.[3] Because no candidate received more than 50 percent of the vote in the general election, the top two vote-getters - Tovo and Riley - were scheduled to meet in a runoff election on December 16, 2014. On November 7, 2014, however, Riley withdrew from the race, leaving Tovo unchallenged for the District 9 seat.[4][5]
