Two states, Mississippi and Pennsylvania, held special elections Tuesday to fill legislative vacancies. One state, Minnesota, held a special election primary. Across the nation, 27 states use special elections to fill legislative vacancies.
The following is a breakdown of Tuesday's special elections:
- Mississippi House, District 116: Since no candidate received a majority of the vote in the January 11 special election, the race proceeded to a runoff on February 1, 2011. Casey Eure (R) defeated fellow Republican contender Jim Atchison in the runoff election. The election was set to fill the vacancy created by Steven Palazzo's (R) election to the US House.[1]
- Pennsylvania House, District 185: After the passing of State Representative Robert Donatucci (D), his widow Maria Donatucci (D) ran to fill his vacated seat.[2] She defeated Lewis Harris (R) in Tuesday's special election.[3]
- Minnesota House, District 5B: Carly Melin defeated several contenders to win the Democratic party nomination for the February 15 special election. Republican Paul Jacobson faced no opposition, averting a primary.[4]
Partisan impact
Since no party picked up a seat, partisan balances were unaffected by Tuesday's elections.
