Campaign themes
2016
Stoll's campaign website highlighted the following issues:
“ |
Fiscal Irresponsibility - Sam Brownback with the full support of our legislator has caused the state’s finances to become so imbalanced that severe cuts are being made in the areas of health care; roads and bridges; and education. Under Brownback and his team they have added long-term debt on our highway system to plug the immediate financial hole they have put us in. This is reckless financial management by anyone’s standard. Johnson County Schools - Brownback and our legislator have failed to protect our greatest asset. They have reduced funding to our schools which will inevitably lead to poorer outcomes. We’re seeing larger K-12 class sizes and reduced programs and services and more cuts are coming. Everyone should want the best possible education for our students. Whether you have children or grandchildren or not, these are the people who will become our teachers, health care providers, and employees. We must have a well-educated workforce. Our schools have historically been a magnet attracting residents and businesses to the state. Without this tremendous asset, revenues will again decline as businesses relocate or fail to move here (another vicious cycle) and property values decline if fewer people desire to live here. Unfair and unsustainable tax policy - The imbalanced tax plan has shifted the responsibilty for taxes from many to a few. LLC's and others are paying $0 taxes to support the state services we all depend on. Middle class families have seen the deduction for their mortgage interest and medical expenses decreased or completely eliminated under the Brownback tax scheme. We now have the nation's highest food sales tax driving people across line to shop, and we are seeing increased property taxes across the state. (Kansas income tax changes could sting). Erosion of Services - Further cuts are being proposed daily and are now directed at the only remaining areas with balances – higher education and Medicaid. The cuts to our higher education institutions are necessitating tuition increases which in turn will lead to lower enrollment and lower revenues. It’s another vicious cycle that must be arrested as soon as possible before further damage is done.[1] |
