J. Stanley Carmical is a special superior court judge in North Carolina. Carmichael was appointed by Democratic Gov. Roy Cooper in May 2018 and confirmed by the General Assembly of North Carolina on June 28, 2018.[1][2]

The North Carolina Superior Courts are split into five divisions and 48 districts. Superior court judges rotate among the districts within their division every six months.[3] However, superior court judges are elected by voters in their district and must reside in the district in which they are elected.[4]

Carmichael was the chief district court judge for the 16B Judicial District, which presides over Robeson County of North Carolina. He joined the court in 1989. He served as chief district court judge from April 2002 to July 2018.[5] He was re-elected to the 16B Judicial District in 2014, winning a term that expired on December 31, 2018.[6][7]

Before his election to the court, Carmical worked as an attorney in private practice.[5]
