J. Thomas Kirkman is a justice of the Massachusetts District Courts. He was sworn into office on May 14, 2015.[1] Kirkman was previously an associate justice for the Orleans District Court in Barnstable County, an office to which he was appointed to by former Democratic Governor Deval Patrick in 2009.[2] He may serve on the court until he reaches the mandatory retirement age of 70.[3]

Education

Kirkman received his undergraduate degree from the University of Illinois and his J.D. from the Rutgers Law School in 1978.[1][2]

Career

From 1993 until his appointment to the Orleans District Court in 2009, Kirkman served as the director of the domestic violence prosecution unit in the office of the Cape and Islands District Attorney. He also previously worked as an attorney in private practice and worked for the Legal Services of Cape Cod and the Islands.[1]
