Candidate Connection

Jake Berry participated in Ballotpedia's candidate survey on April 3, 2018. The survey questions appear in bold, and Jake Berry's responses follow below.[1]

What would be your top three priorities, if elected?

1) Student Safety

2) Communication with the Community
3) Technology Reform[2][3]

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about? Why?

EducationCite error: Invalid <ref> tag; invalid names, e.g. too many[3]

Ballotpedia also asked the candidate a series of optional questions. Jake Berry answered the following:

What characteristics or principles are most important for an elected official?

Ability to listen, research, and understand.[3]
What qualities do you possess that you believe would make you a successful officeholder?
The ability to listen, research, understand, and advocate for my community. These are qualities that i have had the opportunity to exercise as an advocate between schools and parents as a PTA President.[3]
What do you believe are the core responsibilities for someone elected to this office?
Honesty and devotion.[3]
What legacy would you like to leave?
lets just get me elected first.[3]
What was your very first job? How long did you have it?
I was a bus boy at a seafood restaurant for the summer. This was a particularly bad tough job for me as i do not care for seafood and the restaurant was located on a barge on a lake surrounded by the smells of fish.[3]
What happened on your most awkward date?
odd question but here it goes... I have never had a "awkward" date that really comes to mind. I have been very fortunate to of find my love early in life at the age of 20 and since then our dates have been great as it means we are out of the house.[3]
What is your favorite holiday? Why?
Halloween is exciting to me as its the biggest holiday for communities. Its great to see neighbors out and about walking with their children. Not to mention the free candy.[3]
What is your favorite book? Why?
Im not a curl up with a good book and coffee kind of person. I enjoy getting out and doing things. I enjoy reading about projects and how to's about things I am interested in building or doing.[3]
If you could be any fictional character, who would you want to be?
My favorite comic book issue is Superman C-56 where superman fight Muhammad Ali on the Red Planet where superman had no super powers. I was rooting for Ali.[3]
What is your favorite thing in your home or apartment? Why?
our pictures.[3]
What is something that has been a struggle in your life?
not getting involved in EVERYTHING[3]
What is the primary job of a school board member in your view?
Playing a vital role in advancing the success of our students, trustees are the voice for his/her community at a district level. To do this well, trustees need to ask, listen, and learn what the community is saying so that responsible and informed choices can be made. A trustee does not have to agree with everything, but he/she does need to understand everything to effectively arrive at viable solutions.[3]
Who are your constituents?
CCISD Students and Tax Payers[3]
How would you support the diverse needs of your district’s students, faculty, staff, and community?
I would visit and listen at student ran meetings as well as staff meetings to get a localized point of view.[3]
How will you build relationships with members of the broader community? Which groups, organizations, stakeholders will you specifically target?
Face time with the community members at community events and groups. The community can only find me if am able to be found.[3]
What will you do to build a better relationship with parents in the district? What plans do you have to be inclusive of parental involvement?
The PTA is a huge part in getting in front of the parents. Attending as many PTA functions as well as District functions gets me in touch with parents that are able to be involved. To get in touch with parents that do not have the ability to be as involved I will be reaching out via District advertising with contact information.[3]
What issues get in the way of quality education? How would you address these obstacles?
Funding is the main issue as we have been voicing our opinion as a State about the lack of funding for years. Other issues are the changes in curriculum and grading techniques i feel take away from the "simpler" approaches to teaching.[3]
What constitutes good teaching? How will you measure this? How will you support advanced teaching approaches?
Engagement with the students is extremely important when wanting to maximize teaching time. This can be helped with working technology in the hands of the students.[3]
