James H. C. Thomas, Jr. was a judge for the 10th Chancery District of Mississippi. He was elected to the bench in 1994 and served until he passed away on October 1, 2010.[1]

Despite his death in October, Thomas was re-elected judge the following November. This caused a temporary court vacancy that prompted Governor Haley Barbour to appoint Deborah J. Gambrell to fill the position in January 2011.[2][3]

Education

Thomas earned a B.S. degree from the University of Southern Mississippi in 1961. He went on to graduate with a J.D. from Tulane University in 1964.[1]

Thomas acquired additional education in 1995 from the National Judicial College at the University of Nevada.[1]

Career

2010 election

Thomas won the 2010 November election by nearly 8,000 votes, defeating write-in candidates in all counties except Forrest. It appeared on the ballot that he ran unopposed.[2]

The results were broken down as follows:

Thomas received 28,350 votes against a combined total of 20,475 for all write-in candidates.[2]
