Johnson answered the following questions for a survey printed in the Hudson Star-Observer:
“ | Why are you running for the School Board?
I am seeking re-election to the Hudson School Board for the same reason I ran three years ago: I want to keep Hudson a great place to live and raise a family by maintaining and improving the quality of our public education system. I am like most Hudson residents in that I do not have children in the K-12 schools, but all three of my children received excellent educations through the Hudson School District (HSD). It's not just families, but businesses, property owners and the whole community that benefit from strong schools. I have experienced a three-year learning curve in my first term and have invested the time and effort into the training and preparation to be an effective board member for another three years. What do you see as the most important issues facing the Hudson School District over the next two years and beyond? 1) Continuing, improving and expanding strong student achievement in HSD. We have a legal obligation to educate every child; we have a moral obligation to do it well. 2) Our teacher salary structure (TSS) a/k/a "Pay for Performance" is still in the early stages of implementation. The board, administration and teachers worked hard together to come up with a merit pay system that is designed to attract and retain quality teachers. It is important to our community to achieve that goal in a manner that is affordable, yet competitive. It's going to take another two years just to evaluate all teachers. 3) Long-term facility planning, including facilities that are not directly impacted by the current referendum. How do you plan to address those issues as a School Board member? My plan for the HSB to address these issues is to work with our new superintendent to perpetually review our systems and analyze what is working, retain the successful elements, eliminate those that aren't achieving desired results and be bold enough to try new methods. For example, we need to closely monitor, support and adjust our TSS to ensure successful implementation by being competitive yet affordable. In the area of student achievement, we must never "rest on our laurels." While we need to proactively expand learning opportunities, we need to consolidate where resources require. One successful area that should be expanded are the learning academies: Freshman, Healthcare and STEM. Once we have the physical facilities that would allow it, I would like us to add academies in the entrepreneur and vocational/technical areas. Finally, we need to develop a 5-10 year facilities master plan that includes maintenance and upgrades to buildings other than the high school. What makes you the best candidate for the job? I have been told by others that I have the temperament and skill set to lead and serve on the school board. Three years ago, I pledged to seek "Unity in the Community" and have done so primarily by listening to a wide-range of viewpoints. I have led a community engagement process (CEP) that is recognized to be among the most transparent, extensive and comprehensive in the state. We worked with the community to arrive at a compromise, long-term secondary space solution that some said was not possible in Hudson. I have worked hard to build a culture on the school board where members are respected, work well together but are not just "rubber-stamps" for the administration. I put in the time and research to ensure the duties of a board member, and especially president, are fulfilled to the maximum extent. Is there anything else you would like voters to know about you and/or your candidacy for a School Board seat? Since my wife and I started our family here 26 years ago, we are proud to say Hudson, Wisconsin is our home town. That community pride is only strengthened when I attend regional and statewide education events, and Hudson is recognized as a high-achieving and highly cost-effective school district. By no means do I take any personal credit; that is a reputation that's been built over a generation. Nonetheless, it is an honor to be even a small part of the successes of our students and teachers. I embrace the opportunity for even higher achievement in our district now that the community has developed a long-term solution for "bricks and mortar" at the middle school and high school. I want to thank all those who stepped up to participate in the CEP and develop a secondary space solution together as a community. Whether it was attending the two- to three-hour workshops and informational meetings or completing the comprehensive pre-referendum survey, everyone's investment of time and effort reflects that the Hudson area is blessed with concerned residents who want Hudson to be even more successful for years to come. Thank you for your time and your vote on April 5.[6] |
