Noteworthy events
Harassment lawsuit against Judge Weill (2015)
In April 2014, Karla Watkins Bailey, who worked as a court administrator in the Hinds County Court from November 2011 until November 2012, filed a lawsuit against Judge Jeff Weill for harassment, slander and defamation. When she started working at the Hinds County Circuit Clerk’s office in January 2013, Weill allegedly tried to get her fired, saying she could not be trusted and the she could "ruin" him. Bailey sued for punitive damages for loss of reputation and emotional distress.[6]
The following month, Weill filed a motion to dismiss the case on grounds of lack of jurisdiction, failure to state a claim upon which relief can be granted and judicial immunity among the grounds. Retired Judge Henry Lackey, who was appointed to the case, denied the motion to dismiss the lawsuit. Weill's attorney filed an emergency motion requesting that Judge Lackey stay his ruling until the Mississippi Supreme Court hears his appeal.[6]
