A fourth seat was up for special election on August 9, 2016, which was held in conjunction with the school district's primary election. In her bid for re-election, incumbent Holly Thompson faced six challengers in the primary: Andrew Kennedy, Gary Kowalkowski, Kristian Mortenson, Joel Nelson, John Parker, and Christi Tullbane.
