My name is John Larkin, and I am running for Wayne County Circuit Court Judge. I am a lifelong Wayne County resident. I attended St. Michael’s grade school, Brother Rice High School, University of Michigan, and University of Detroit Law School.

In 1993, I started my own law firm in Livonia, MI and have successfully practiced here for 33 years. I am the most experienced candidate on the ballot, with over 17 years more experience than my opponent. I’ve helped people through their most challenging times and developed a comprehensive skill set in both criminal and civil law. My three decades of practice have encompassed a broad range of areas, including civil and criminal law, bankruptcy, landlord-tenant, consumer protection, civil rights, license restoration, property law, and personal injury cases. There is no area of law that my practice has not touched or that I am unable to navigate.

I met my wife, Soraya, in law school and we have been happily married for 29 years. We have 3 adult children, Caitlyn, Veronica, and John, and 2 rescue dogs, Nori (deaf Pitbull) and Trudee (English bulldog). At the age of 13, I lost my mother. Her loss led me to lean on my strong family support and pursuits of hockey and boxing. These positive influences helped me refocus my attention during this formative stage of life on my education and being of service to my community.

I won the 1986 Golden Gloves Championship, trained at the 1986 Olympic Training Camp, and ran 12 marathons.
  • Fairness and Impartiality John believes that impartiality is paramount, requiring judges to approach each case with an open mind, free of bias or prejudice, and render decisions based solely on the merits of the case and applicable law. He recognizes these principles are crucial in fostering public trust in the judiciary, and are indispensable priorities in safeguarding the integrity and credibility of the judiciary.
  • Willingness to Listen In the courtroom, active listening is essential. When people feel heard, they are more likely to accept a judge’s ruling, even if they disagree with the outcome. Understanding this, John makes it a priority to listen attentively to the concerns and perspectives of all parties. He recognizes that respect and genuine consideration foster trust, ensuring that individuals leave the courtroom feeling that their voices were acknowledged, regardless of the final decision.
  • Preparedness, Professionalism, and Predictability A good judge meets expectations, but a great judge exceeds them. They're not just prepared and punctual, but they treat everyone with kindness and respect, fostering a welcoming atmosphere in the courtroom. When clients and attorneys know what to expect, it not only resolves cases but also streamlines the entire judicial process, making it more efficient and effective. John is committed to being thoroughly prepared for each case, diligently reviewing materials beforehand to facilitate efficient proceedings. He prioritizes punctuality, respectfulness, and approachability in the courtroom, fostering an environment where all individuals are heard and their position fairly evaluated.
Accessibility to Judiciary and Legal System, Criminal Justice Reform and fair Dispute Resolution.
I look up to Judge Frank Caprio from Providence, Rhode Island. Judge Caprio is known for listening to people and taking the time to listen to their stories. Rather than simply imposing penalties, he seeks to understand the underlying issues and find constructive solutions. Judge Caprio's experience, compassion, and fairness makes him an outstanding judge and a kind human being. I believe that by following his example, I can foster an effective judicial environment that prioritizes justice and supports individuals in overcoming their challenges. However, I also believe in protecting the public from those who are dangerous and that will injure or kill others.
Judge Frank Caprio of Providence, RI and his tv show, "Caught in Providence." I believe Judge Caprio is an excellent Jurist.
For a Judge the most important characteristics are Impartiality, Integrity, Legal Knowledge and Experience, Respectful, Consistent, Punctual, Efficient and Humble.
Experience - With 33 years of legal practice, I am the most experienced candidate on the ballot, with over 17 years more experience than my opponent.

In addition to knowing the law, equally important is the temperament required for this seat. A judge must be fair, patient, and able to apply the law impartially. As retired Wayne County Circuit Court Chief Judge Tim Kenny, who has practiced law as a prosecutor and been on the bench for a cumulative 43 years, noted, “John is a man of character, patience, and kindness. He will make an excellent judge.”
A judge must use the characteristics outlined previously to assess the relevant facts of a case and apply the law impartially. The judge's role is to enforce the law fairly, without regard to personal or political beliefs. By adhering to this approach, a judge upholds the separation of powers defined in the Constitution and fosters public trust and confidence in the judicial system.
I hope my legacy reflects that I was a good father, husband, attorney and Christian person. These are my core values that matter most to me.
The first historical event that happened in my lifetime was when John Lennon was shot and killed. I was 13 years old at the time and remember my 8th grade teacher telling me about the significance of this event.
I was an ice cream truck driver in the summer of 1982.
My favorite books are the Calvin and Hobbes series.
Spider-Man, because Spiderman (Peter Parker) learned "with great power, comes great responsibility"
At the age of 13, I lost my mother. Her sudden and tragic death left me feeling lost. I found myself getting into trouble. Fortunately, I had people who cared about me and helped me get back on the right track. My Grandmother and Father instilled in me the simple, yet fundamental values of what it means to be a good person, the importance of showing up on time, being truthful, generous and treating others with respect and kindness.

For the past 33 years, I’ve dedicated my career to helping people get back on the right side of the law. As a judge, I will continue this important work, to make a difference in the lives of others, no matter how small, and to leave a positive impact on both the legal profession and the Wayne County community.
The 3rd Circuit Court handles very serious matters, including all felonies, civil lawsuits exceeding $25,000, cases involving divorce, custody disputes, child support, termination of parental rights, among many other issues. These are weighty issues that may have a profound impact on individuals’ lives. A judge in this role may have the authority to impose life sentence, revoke a parent's custody/visitation rights or determine the monetary damages in a civil suit. Every case should be treated with the utmost seriousness, for the decisions made carry significant consequences. Moreover, this position oversees all of Wayne County, encompassing 43 communities and over 1.8 million residents, making it one of considerable influence.

With 33 years of legal practice in this courthouse, I have developed a deep understanding of the challenges my clients face. Each case is personal to me because I am their advocate. I have seen firsthand the critical difference a fair and impartial judge can make. I understand the anxiety and uncertainty clients feel when they stand before a judge, seeking justice and hoping for a fair hearing.

My strong personal ethics and extensive professional experience make me the best candidate for this role. I am committed to ensuring that every individual who appears before me is treated with respect and fairness, upholding the integrity of the legal process.
Judge Frank Caprio of Providence, Rhode Island. He has a show called "Caught in Providence."
Yes, a judge should have empathy, but it must be balanced with impartiality. Empathy allows a judge to understand the human aspects of the cases before them, enabling them to appreciate the personal circumstances and challenges that people face. This understanding can help ensure that the law is applied fairly and that the decisions made take into account the broader context of each case.

However, a judge must not allow empathy to override their duty to uphold the law objectively and without bias. The ability to strike a balance between understanding the personal circumstances of the parties involved and applying the law impartially is essential for a judge to render fair, just, and thoughtful decisions. Empathy enhances a judge’s capacity to relate to the litigants, but the ultimate responsibility is to ensure that justice is served according to the law.
I am rated by the Detroit Bar Association as "Well Qualified."
I'm running for Circuit Court because I have spent the last 33 years litigating in the 3rd Circuit Court. I have firsthand experience of what it's like to have both excellent and less effective judges. I've lived in Wayne County my entire life. I started my law practice and my family here. At this stage of my personal and professional life, I am well-equipped to take on the responsibilities of a Circuit Court Judge and make a positive impact in our judicial system.
I do not believe that prior experience in a government or political position is necessary for a judge. A judge’s role is to interpret the law and apply it to the facts of the case, free of their personal and political bias.

What is essential for a judge is extensive experience in the courtroom practicing law. This hands-on experience provides an understanding of legal principles as well as the challenges individuals encounter in their daily life.
Limited accessibility to the justice system. However, this can be improved. It's evident that individuals with financial means have greater access to justice compared to those without. In my view, courts should not only offer court-appointed attorneys in criminal cases but also furnish litigants in civil cases with a list of referral sources, providing them with options to address their legal issues. When both parties are adequately represented, it leads to a more equitable and just resolution.

Also Zoom court has provided indigent defendants with easier access to the court without the cost of travel to the courthouse including lost hourly wages and travel time. It has also reduced the number of warrants for failure to appear in court.
Simply put, the greatest opportunity is to make the court's more accessible to the general public. This can be done by 1) Zoom court which allows the public to see and understanding what is happening in our courts 2) making the court records easily reviewable by the public so the public understands what happened and why.
No, the great majority of my experience has been in the trial courts, where I have honed my ability to resolve disputes, protect the public, and help individuals get their lives back on track. I believe this experience uniquely equips me to serve effectively, ensuring that justice is delivered fairly while providing people the opportunity to rebuild their lives.
My favorite dad joke: Why did the dog sit in the shade? He didn't want to become a hot dog.
Financial transparency and government accountability are essential to building public trust. Increased openness allows citizens to better monitor government operations, ensuring that politicians, including judges, are held accountable and discouraging improper or illegal activities. The more visibility the public has into the workings of government, the stronger the safeguard against misconduct.
