John McLaurin Jr.
John McLaurin, Jr. is a judge for the 20th Chancery Court District in Mississippi. He was appointed to the court by Republican Governor Phil Bryant on May 27, 2015, and assumed office immediately. McLaurin was appointed to replace former Judge Dan Fairly.[1] McLaurin ran for election to his seat in 2016.[2] He won the general election on November 8, 2016.
Biography
McLaurin received his undergraduate degree from Vanderbilt University and his J.D. from the University of Mississippi School of Law. Prior to his judicial appointment in May 2015, he practiced law with the firm of McLaurin & McLaurin and served as a family court master for Rankin County.[1]

Mississippi held special elections for local judicial offices on November 8, 2016. The candidate filing deadline was May 6, 2016.[3] Incumbent John McLaurin Jr. defeated Jim Nix in the 20th Chancery District general election.[2]

Judges of the Mississippi Chancery Court are each elected to four-year terms. The elections for this court are nonpartisan contested elections. To serve on this court, a judge must be at least 26 years old and have been a district (and state) resident for five years and have five years of experience as an attorney.[4]
