Davis earned an engineer of mines degree from the Colorado School of Mines in 1956 and a J.D. from the University of California Davis School of Law in 1972.[2]
Career
Prior to attending law school, Davis worked as a mining engineer and land surveyor. He held land surveying licenses in California and Nevada. After law school, Davis opened his first practice in Minden and later would go on to become a Justice of the Peace in Lyon County. He then moved to Tonopah to run for district judge.[2][3]

April 26, 2011
Nevada: Eleven attorneys sought Davis's Fifth Judicial District seat, which included handling civil, criminal, and family law cases and required travel to the county seats in Esmeralda, Mineral, and Nye counties and to Pahrump in southern Nye County to hear cases.[3]
A Minden attorney, Donald C. Smith, was interviewed for Davis's position by the Nevada Commission on Judicial Selection. Smith was a 33-year resident of Nevada. He was a board member of the MeFiYi Foundation and the Carson Valley Tennis Association. He served as general counsel for Employers Insurance Co. of Nevada. He previously worked for the State Industrial Insurance System.[3]
Following interviews, the commission deliberated and nominated three finalists from which Gov. Brian Sandoval made his appointment. This process was open to the public.[3]
